So in Night Shift Thoughts a night or so ago, I was thinking a little about Joss Wheedon’s exceedingly lackluster and sometimes downright wtf adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, and it turns out I was correct in one of my wondering: Joss did indeed genderswap a character JUST so he could have Don John explain his villainous thoughts/plans during sex.
1. I hate the trend in some Shakespeare productions of the recent past to have the Villainous Plan Monologues occur while characters are having clothes-mostly-on sex. I find it weird.
2. The scene in Much Ado was super off putting because a) pretty sure there was another character in the room and b) it’s really hard to forget that the flipped character was originally a dude and that Don John is played by an out gay man. But you totally can’t have two dudes bang if you’re Joss Whedon.
