the whole “rivers of blood” thing only happens if you don’t unharden her. stop her from killing the traitor, then tell her she made the right choice pulling her scouts back because people aren’t expendable assets, and she reforms the chantry without murderknifin’ everyone.
Unfortunately the single most important part is missing. This only describes the lead up to being able to unharden her. To actually unharden Leliana you have to do all this then tell her “Stop torturing yourself” once she opens the box and monologues. If you tell her “It was necessary” she hardens even if you spare the traitor, tell her she did the right thing in pulling the scouts back and spare Natalie.

Okay so spoilers for the choices for the new Divine in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
There is a way to prevent the whole “rivers of blood in the Grand Cathedral” part that can happen with one of the options. And it’s not an obvious option.
To avoid the “rivers of blood” if the game gives you (or you choose) Leliana for Divine, you have to “un-harden” her. First, don’t let her kill the traitor in Haven. Then make sure that she doesn’t kill the person you run into on her personal quest. There’s a walkthrough video on that here.
