Random things that pop into my head at 5am…eh, 5:40am…

Hmm.

Thoughts on my general tendencies when doing BioWare romances below the cut.

I had this much bigger, longer, and likely to end up rambly thing started, but remembered I’d done actually completed two femalePC/malePartyMember romances instead of one. Make that three: remembered I completed female Sith Warrior/Malavai Quinn is SWTOR.

I generally find BioWare’s ladies more interesting than their dudes, partly because my reaction ends up being “Oh, a VARIETY of interesting and non-damsel-in-distress female characters? LET ME KNOW AS MUCH AS I POSSIBLY CAN ABOUT THEM.”

But the main idea of my random thought was wondering if my own real-world fear of accidentally dating a Nice Guy if/when I ever start dating impacts how I view BioWare’s male LIs when I’m playing a female character. It might also have to do with my perception of power dynamics, though I think that’s a little less involved in why I wasn’t drawn to femPC/maleNPC in most BioWare games; in SWTOR, though, the fact that the power dynamic in the female Sith Warrior/Malavai Qunn relationship was pretty darn clearly in my Warrior’s favor did have a big impact of why I went for it.

Random thoughts. Partly brought on by spoilery semi-confirmation info about ME3 romanceoptions that I found on an LJ comm.

Kirkwall as a Hellmouth

stxena replied to your post: URL title change

Dude, that explains so much, actually. (That Kirkwall is on a Hellmouth.)

It’s a pretty good analogy, I think. Blood magic ritual layout as city planning and Corypheus lurking underground…yep, Hellmouth.

And now I’m picturing Hawke & Co. as high schoolers ::cackles:: Which…also maps fairly well in some places, at least as far as early seasons go.

Garrett/Marian as Buffy, Carver as Xander, Merrill as Willow, Isabela as a far-better-at-coping/more well-adjusted Faith…the other companions don’t map quite as well.

knickerweaselscast:

Knickerweasels is a weekly fancast by hosts flutiebear and myjusticecake on all things Dragon Age and fandom. We’ve taken our ongoing conversation to the internet in the hope that some of you will find it interesting, amusing, or perhaps even want to join in.

Episode #2: “Problematic”

Dragon Age is often lauded for its egalitarian take on queer relationships and gender roles. When it comes to sexuality, gender and race, what does Bioware get right? Where is there still room for improvement?

Also: How can fandom act as a safe space? When it comes to fantasy worlds, why aren’t there ever any brown people? And just who exactly are Big White Titties expected to please?

(Note: Very minor spoilers for Mark of the Assassin in this episode)

Previous Episode:  Six Ways’ Til Sunday

On the subject of the depictions of trans* characters in the DA universe, Serendipity, conversation tree screw up aside, is a definite step up from the ones in Origins who were labeled as “ ‘female’ companion.” Serendipity is just Serendipity.

Because all the Warden options in Origins totally presented being drafted by Duncan as an honor. Not as, you know, a choice between joining the Wardens or certain death/imprisonment or some other sentence with the high likelihood of death. Because that’s pretty much what it is in Origins. It’s not an honor; it’s a “get out of jail with some pretty pesky side-effects” card.

Oh, she gets bashed plenty for being “too mannish” and not pretty enough. And people forget that she’s bi, too, since she will ask a femHawke if she ever thought there might have been a possibility of something between them if Aveline hadn’t found Donnic.

And she gets bashed for “being a stick-in-the-mud,” being a prude, slut-shaming Isabela, and really a host other things.

If you haven’t seen it, you’re kind of lucky.

To the Bioware Fandom Community (and really all RPers)

imafrakkincylon:

I would politely like to remind you all that Lesbians exist. Bisexual women who primarily find women attractive over men, also exist. They exist, and they should be heard and recognized.

I have lurked around a lot and have seen a lot of this outcry for more m/m pairings and shipping ALL the m/m pairings and yay for m/m pairings. And that is just fine by me. Homosexual men also exist, and they have a right to exist.

Some good points. Luckily my corner of the tumblr DA fandom is better about loving all types of pairings than some other circles of the DA fandom.
