Things I Hate About Anxiety:

When I am feeling good and happy about and admiring about some part of my chosen appearance–like my hair after a fresh haircut, or how well a buttoning shirt (from the men’s department) fits, or how good a shirt/tie combination looks–I hate how the voice of Anxiety will creep in with “you’ll never get a job dressed that way; you’ll never get a call back from an interview if you go dressed like that–as yourself, the way you’re comfortable–everyone knows that, you know that.”

And…it’s not exactly *un*true. Articles pop up all the time about the impact of makeup and perceived femininity on hiring. Most recently, Cheeto Voldemort’s desire for his female staffers to “dress like women” also reflected this (though I am thankful that that spawned backlash).

I cannot function normally in a dress. In a dress, I have to have a different persona–I have to be a character. I could probably pull off Distant Aristocrat, but I’ve only ever *actually* performed–as an actress–Somewhat Campy Ingenue. Otherwise you just get Person Who Feels Like They Are Doing Really Bad Drag And Would Prefer Not To if you put me in a dress. Skirts I can manage by pretending they are kilts. I do not think that would work if I had to wear one on a daily basis; in that case, I would be sorely tempted to buy the cheapest kilt I could find, wear it, and see if any one noticed.

In short, I want to be Me, and anxiety is a douchecanoe about that when it comes to the job market (which tends to hate me quite well enough sight-unseen, on paper, let alone in person).

its the notion of boycotts

you wanna know why the bus boycotts of the civil rights movement were so successful?

because an alternative black run transportation system was created for those who couldn’t walk to work or whatever they had to go

they didn’t just tell people “oh the bus enforces racist policies so don’t take it and FUCK if you can’t get to work on time or where you need to be!”

they said “hey you’re paying to get on the bus and not even being given a seat let alone being ejected if a white passenger needs your seat. here’s a potentially better alternative where you pay to sit down and get to where you need to go”

all this “boycott Target, Walmart, Monsanto owned companies” comes from a notion of boycott located in the politic of privileged white people

and that’s why they are largely unsuccessful

its why Obama just gave Monsanto the green light to commit even more fuckery to your food

its the reason why cooperation are considered people

its the reason why Walmart is allowed to usurp safety and labor regulations in their factories, and underpay their American workers

because you say “don’t spend your money there” and that’s the end of the story

you expect people to locate their survival in a politic of “abstaining from unethical choices”

and then from there those unethical choices are somehow supposed to magically disappear. when really only a small percentage of people are able to boycott so many things

there wouldn’t be a movement located around the “99%” if 99% of people could really afford to stop shopping at the unethical places and stop buying the unethical brands

good luck with your hocus pocus activist logic

hocus pocus lol. but this shit is hella real.

It’s the fact that people ignore that the Civil Rights Movement would involve months of planning and prepping before hand – alternate methods to get to work/school, lawyers to press the demands for change of laws, etc.

But all you see is the marches and protests.  The “exciting” part.  Which is why a lot of modern activism suffers from lots of effort for little payoff.  (There’s also a good portion of anti-blackness in the unwillingness to pay attention to the level of intelligence and planning that the CR movement had to do and to talk to people who were involved).

And it was long! The bus boycott was over a year. 381 days I think? That takes stamina! And determination. Not just one season of TV show. Not just a few weeks of think pieces. It takes commitment and long term work.

we need to talk about CARVE THE MARK. and the authors that wont listen.

Maybe you’ve seen this book around. CARVE THE MARK is the new book by Veronica Roth, author of DIVERGENT, and extremely racist. For weeks now people of color have been speaking up about this. x x It features extremely racist portrayals of black-coded people as savage aggressors. But time and time again youll notice white people on social media who say they’ll check for themselves instead of listening to POC.

This time it happens to be an author who has their history of writing racist books x x x x

I think you guys are smart enough to understand that as a white man, there is no way he’d be able to do that.

This thread explains the consequences of this behavior quite nicely

Stop supporting CARVE THE MARK.
Stop supporing authors who support racism.

CALL. PEOPLE. OUT. ON. THEIR. RACISM.

Its out today. I urge you to unfollow everyone who merrily promotes this book like nothing happened.

Yesterday Roth gave an extremely ableist interview in which she talked about the supernatural chronic pain her protagonist experiences and how chronic pain is a gift. Im speechless. https://twitter.com/asymbina/status/821180295961518080

I haven’t seen anything about this book before now but YIKES count this off my tbr and out of my life.

this is why you guys need to share this thing

nobody else will say shit.
people dont care about the pain of black people, and neither do they about the pain of disabled people.
its so important to speak up, to share, to warn, to review. dont wait for somebody else to do it. they’re not going to.

Antiblackness continues to rear its ugly head. I’m not surprised.

…chronic pain is a GIFT, she says? Here, lady – have my constant migraine. Aren’t I thoughtful, to give you such a gift?

I don’t know how else to make you see..

The sharp rise in anti-Romani and Antisemitic attacks in Europe is appalling. The numbers of incidents are even more shocking considering just how small of a minority both ethnic groups are, respectively.

Many of these attacks are not perpetrated by your average racist or xenophobe, these are calculated and orchestrated acts of violence by neo-Nazis designed to instill fear in both Jewish and Romani communities.  It is evidenced that violence is steadily increasing in frequency and intensity.

What is even more frightening, is that fact that these are only reported attacks by OSCE reporting nations. The true scope of anti-Romani and Antisemitic crimes is unknown because many go unreported.

blessed International Punching Nazis Appreciation Day, everyone.

Please remember that Jack Kirby was Jewish. And that this happened during WWII. And that Cap was created by Jewish American men during WWII and the rise of the Third Reich. They created him as a sort of golem while our family members and people were being slaughtered overseas and America didn’t want to get involved and didn’t seem to care about the spread of Nazism until the United States was attacked and forced to become involved. Please don’t forget and erase this Jewish history.

I love every single person who reblogged this

I don’t think people realize how much of an impact this kind of support can have, I don’t think everyone knows what these little things can mean to us.

It may just be me, I don’t know. But every single time I see this on my dash or on someone’s blog or anywhere else, I kind of just breathe a sigh of relief. That’s one more person who cares. That’s one more person who doesn’t hate me.

Because it means so much, especially when all the media is spewing out is that I’m a terrible person and no one wants people like me near them. It means so much because I’m tired of people who won’t sit next to me in class, or who choose to join the longer line at the grocery store because they don’t want to be beside me and my family. It means so much when I have to lift my head any time someone says the words Islam or Muslim because I’m scared that they’ll say something that’ll hurt, when I have to pay attention to the news because who knows what so and so is saying now, who knows which of my people are being attacked now, who knows what’s going to happen to me now.

It means so much because I’ve been given the idea that the world is against me. And a huge part of it may be, but at least I’ve been reminded that some of it, just a small group of people, acknowledges that I’m a person too. That people like me are just that, people.

Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know. But now you do, so thank you for believing that I’m human when so many people don’t.

Have a great day x

Go unfollow this blog all you want, I am reblogging this.
