PSA

If you got into a certain unnamed show recently, for a certain unnamed ship, after a certain other unnamed show killed off half of another unnamed ship, and then you decided to not go back and try to watch the show from the beginning (which means you missed getting to know some truly amazing main and side characters), and you have now decided to stop watching the show–which you and all the rest of us knew was in its final season–because half of the ship you started watching for may or may not be (because, had you watched the rest of the show, you would know how it excels at fake-outs)
dead, then the door is welcomed to hit you on your way out as far as I am concerned.

Kindly do not grief the fans who are fans of the show itself as well as the ship who decide to see the story out, even to the edge of doom.

Hey so now we’re paying attention to Captain America

kentuckyfriednug:

I’d like to draw more attention to antisemitism that affects real Jewish people, because honestly? I have not seen as much outrage over the lives of actual people than I have over a fictional white gentile. So I’ve compiled a list of posts and blogs for my fellow gentiles to read.

Here is a post discussing why tumblr’s social justice community often forgets or dismisses antisemitism

Here is a post about antisemitic microaggressions

Here is a post detailing recent antisemitism in Europe

Here is a post regarding the girl who took selfies at an anti-Muslim protest, and her antisemitism

Here is a post about Jewish coded characters and using Jewish history (among others) for tragedy points

And here are some Jumblr blogs I highly recommend reading and following:

Return of the Judai

Jewish Privilege

Little Goy Things

Tikkun Olam or GTFO

Antisemitism EU

Ace Jews

Exposing Antisemitism

B’Nei Ruth

And some more blogs for learning:

My Jewish Learning

Jew FAQ

Aish

Please support Jewish people, not just on Tumblr, but in real life. Please educate yourself on antisemitism so you can fight it, not just when it affects your fictional faves but when it affects real people.

the comic book industry was built on the back of jewish creators, superhero comics were pioneered by jewish creators. everything we have today from superman to captain america, is down to the creativity of jewish artists and writers. and todays comics do nothing but spit on that legacy

Our culture and experiences shaped these characters. Shaped this legacy.

Superman is living embodiment of tikkun olam. Kal-El is literally hebrew, he is given Clark Kent a gentile name on earth he is based on the jewish immigrant experience. The hope of two jewish boys during the depression.

Captain America is literally Erskine’s golem. Erskine is jewish man who forced out Germany, he gave a good man the ability to become a super solider. Because jews needed hope.

Ripping characters away from their jewish roots is an incredible disrespect to the people who built the universes we’ve grown to love.

Jack Kirby, born Jacob Kurtzberg, and Joe Simon were two Jewish men in a dangerous time who did something extraordinary. They created a true American hero who stood up for the little guy, like them. They created a political statement by putting Captain America on the cover of their comic knocking Hitler out with one good punch. This led to the two men receiving death threats. Both men served in World War II, fighting against the Nazi regime.

It is so incredibly disrespectful to these two men to write this new story line of Captain America. The writers have already said it isn’t a Skrull, or a LMD, or brainwashing… this is the new direction they are choosing to take the character in. In light of this new development I encourage everyone to remember the men behind the incredible Cap we have had for all these years and to take a stand against the new series. Don’t buy it, don’t reblog it, do not show anything but opposition to it.

And always, Remember Jack Kirby and Joe Simon

“It means on the most fundamental level that the most trusted hero in the Marvel universe is now secretly a deep-cover Hydra operative.” (x)

No, it means you made a symbol of hope and freedom created by two Jewish men during World War II into a Nazi for shock value to sell comics.

The amount of bullshit, garbage excuses for doing something so deeply, offensively, morally wrong just astounds me.

The panel discussion being broadcast was teens and adults with autism and how federal funding could better support them. As the show closed, the moderator asked if anyone on the panel felt a vaccine had caused their autism.

Silence.

One teen panelist spoke up, “no, but it hurts that you would ask that question.”

The moderator’s tone softened, he apologized and asked why. I’m going to paraphrase the boy’s response because it has been several years and for the life of me I have not been able to find a transcript of this event anywhere, which has driven me to madness. If anyone from C-SPAN reads this and knows the talk I’m referring to, please send me a transcript! The panelist’s response was incredibly moving and I wish I could give him credit for it and do his response justice.

As I recall his response was, “because it makes me feel like I’m damaged or broken, when I’m not. I was born this way. My brain just works differently than most other people’s. When people talk about vaccines and autism it makes me feel like I’m not a person but a ‘bad result.’ It reminds me that no one wants a kid like me and parents will risk their kid’s lives and everyone else’s just to make sure their kid doesn’t turn out like me.”

There was silence on the radio. By this time I’d pulled into our parking spot at home and sat in the car in silence as well. It was a moment of epiphany.

Oh bleep, I thought. I’ve never thought of it like that.

The panelist’s words were so loaded and unfiltered. He was speaking from the heart and I could imagine the pain he felt when he described that some parents would rather have their children die than turn out like him. That is an incredible and completely unnecessary burden for any child to carry around, yet any time vaccines were discussed, those assumptions were coded in language.
