“Empowered” and “sexy” are not universally synonymous. That a woman is not a sex kitten does not mean that she’s any less comfortable or empowered or any of that stuff. See above, re: not a homogenous demographic. Stop making sexiness a universal demand. Let some characters be unsexy. And for f*ck’s sake, please, please stop drawing women who are injured, or dead, or being tortured, or punching bad guys, in sex-kitten pin-up poses. That is bad visual storytelling, and it is INCREDIBLY creepy. Let women be heroes for the sake of heroism. Women don’t have to be damaged or traumatized to be strong, or to want to make a difference. Corollary: Dropping rape into a backstory is not a panacea for making a female character complex and gritty.

Imagine you have a daughter. Imagine the kind of women you’d like her to want to grow up to be. Write them. Write women you’d want to be friends — really good friends — with. Write women you’d get in arguments with. Write women you’d be legitimately scared of. Write women like your mom, like your aunts, like your wife, like your friends, like your nieces and nephews and daughters and bosses and friends. We are not aliens… This, too, goes back to “doing things.” A lot of the time, male characters act, and female characters are acted upon. Let female characters make difficult choices — and sometimes choose wrong — and have struggles and the same real victories. Because without those things, they’re not characters; they’re just window dressing.

Musings on the Qun

Yesterday, I ran an f!Hawke through “Sheparding Wolves.” It’s been awhile since I did that one, as I have a ridiculous amount of Hawkes, and have been running the four or five completed ones through Legacy and/or MotA (and some non-completed ones to see how things go differently. So many Hawkes, so little time).

The Hawke in question is a rogue, and chose to fight the Arvaraad on the basis that Ketojan should be free. After he expressed the belief that the only correct thing for him to do was to die anyway, she washed her hands of the matter with the “I agreed to get you here; that’s all I really signed up for, and I did that. This is no longer my problem” option.

And then Ketojan said, “You know of certainty and borders. You are closer to the Qunari than you admit. Your role would change little if you accepted the Qun,” and a kind of side-eyed my screen.

“Your role would change little if you accepted the Qun.” Interpreted one way, this seems to say, “Carrying out instructions would not be a new thing for you.” Read another, more inferential way, it could potentially be interpreted as, “They too might use you as a fixer of problems."I expect this dialogue is the same on m!Hawke, though I have not gotten an m!Hawke anywhere near that quest in ages,

Except that Tallis’s background is made of "WTF is up with this” and apparently she was a slave first, then freed by the Qunari (how in Andraste’s name did she manage to get assassin skills as a slave? sense, it makes none), instead of being an assassin who converted, I would wonder if this was the interpretation of ONE LINE OF GAME DIALOGUE that Felicia Day seized upon as saying “female Qunari fighters totally a canon possibility.”

Yes, I just tried to make MotA/Redemption make semi-canon sense 😐 I am filing Redemption under fanfic and MotA under “I am wondering if half of this is Varric trolling Cassandra.”

Good morning tumblr! (for those of you who are in the vaguely correct time zone!) Here is some Orlesian finery Aveline for you – continuing this series!

Yeah, Aveline would probably give me a good glaring-at for stuffing her into ridiculous green poofy slashed sleeves – BUT! it was either that or a dress. I suppose Hawke has been trying to persuade Aveline to explore her Orlesian roots for the party…

(much inspiration for the outfit came from this kinda thing, which is actually English but WELP as you can see she got off relatively easy)

also I’m kind of a horrible person in that whenever I draw people with red hair/green eyes I always end up forcing them to wear green ._.

Up next… Isabela!

Medieval Thedas: The Loathly Lady

medievalthedas:

The Loathly Lady was a common figure in medieval literature; her most famous appearance is probably in Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath’s Tale.

In that story, a knight of King Arthur’s court rapes a woman. He is to be executed, but Guinevere intervenes. He will be spared if he can learn what it is…

Another Loathly Lady appears in Child ballad 32, “King Henry.” This time there’s no rape involved. The British folk rock band Steeleye Span (I adore them) recorded a version.

Fuck Yeah Aveline: My Dragon Age Playlist

fuckyeahaveline:

It’s called “Dragon Age Mood”:

1. “In the Sun (Desert Dwellers Remix)” by Donna de Lory.

“I picture you in the sun wondering what went wrong/And falling down on your knees asking for sympathy/And being caught in between all you wish for and all you seen/And trying to find anything you can feel…

I have a short playlist for my f!Cousland warrior. It’s a mix of general Blight, FML, and a little bit shippy with an unhardened Leliana.

1. “Everybody Out of the Water” – The Wallflowers

“They say nobody panic, help is on it’s way,
We’re already on it, you’ve got to be brave.
If you can fix it now, then don’t make us wait.
Man there ain’t nobody coming back away from the gates.
That bell that you hear, that’s hell ringing in your ears.”

General Blight stuff.

2. “When I’m Gone” – 3 Doors Down

“Somewhere in this darkness / There’s a light that I can’t find
Maybe it’s too far away / Or maybe I’m just blind.” The line “right me when I’m wrong” particularly works for my Kyra and Leliana as Kyra nearly made the “wrong” (in her own eyes when thinking more clearly, and in the eyes of like, everyone I had in her party in the Deep Roads) decision of siding with Branka. The only thing that stopped her from doing that was Leliana calling her out on it.

3. “Animal I Have Become” – Three Days Grace

“Somebody help me through this nightmare.” This one is mostly Kyra feeling like she can never quite come back from some of the things she’s done (the main ones being accidentally letting “Kitty” possess the little girl, killing Connor, and almost siding with Branka with full knowledge of what she’d done to her own people).

4. “Enter Sandman (Instrumental)” – Apocalyptica

Mood music.

5. “Ballad for Dead Friends” – Dashboard Prophets

“How are you feeling? / Do you feel OK? / ‘Cause I don’t.
It keeps me reelin’ / Will I ever be the same? / No I won’t.” Kyra has to try to save the world after beinf bombarded with the murder of her family, the deaths of Jory and Daveth, and the slaughter of Duncan, Cailan, and most of the people she met at Ostagar.

You guys don’t realise how many commission sketches I’ve done over the past week. I’m spitting these out at a rate of two to three a day.

This one’s for EmeraldEmbers of Isabela and Merrill c:

Ohh, this is sexy. One of my fave pairings.

So awesome! And I absolutely adore Isabela’s muscles. @u@

OTP alert

I am kind of in love with Isabela’s arm here, not gonna lie.

Serendipity.

Note that I cannot draw, but I wanted to try anyway. I drew a little in high school, but that was about six years ago and mostly I stuck to things resembling tribal tattoos or robots. I did a robot version of the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian and my art teach probably decided I was very, very strange.
But yeah. I am not good at drawing. At all. But I actually managed to finished something without listening to the “this sucks, don’t bother” voice, so that’s something.

#it’s amusing to watch from afar how dragon age fandom can’t do anything without turning into a wank fest. #lol fan week #’LET’S PRETEND TO BE AWKWARDLY POLITE TO EACH OTHER WEEK’

megan ily

No one is “pretending to be polite.”

…and this…

I have seen way less actual wank in the DA fandom than I’ve seen in other fandoms. And I have yet to see anyone claiming to be married to Alistair/Zevran/Anders/Fenders/Cullen/whoever on the astral plain. I hope i never see that, as THAT leads to True Wank.

Broodmother PR Rep: When I think of wank, I think of the Homestuck and Hetalia fandoms and…Final Fantasy VII. This the first fandom I’ve been actively involved in, but I have witnessed wank and maybe .5% of it has been in this fandom, and all of that was on the BSN and LJ.

I do my best to avoid the BSN (unless I’m, say, stuck on puzzles) because it is indeed a pit of horrors.
