Autochrome portrait of Percy MacKaye as Alwyn. Photo by Arnold Genthe, 1913.
American playwright Percy MacKaye (1875-1956) appears here as the poet Alwyn, “friend of all,” in Sanctuary: A Bird Masque. MacKaye was a proponent of communal civic theater and a nature lover.
He wrote this masque as a public pageant for the dedication of the Bird Club sanctuary in Meriden, New Hampshire. The play, written in verse, told of a hunter’s redemption by his prey, the Bird Spirit. At a time whendemand for feathers in hats and other products was harming entire species, the play helped promote the wild bird conservation movement.
This is amazing. Without the information about the photograph, I never would have guessed it was from 1913; I figured it was from the 1970s until I got to the caption.

I would have liked it better in blue or a dark green, but I was just really glad my femHawke’s got to wear pants. The neck could have been better fitted, but other than that, I’d totally wear that to a Renaissance Faire.
Remember, remember the “5th of November, 1872 – Women’s suffrage in the United States: In defiance of the law, suffragist Susan B. Anthony votes for the first time, and is later fined $100.”

This would be great, but I’d be willing to settle for better lighting.

It’s time for Photos of the Week.
A baby hippopotamus lies next to its mother on the day it meets the public for the first time at the Berlin Zoo on Nov. 1. The baby was born at the zoo on Oct. 23.

So in an article titled Sexy vs. Skanky, Cosmopolitan magazine lets you know that slut shaming is “skanky.”
One of the definitions of skank is “One who is disgustingly foul or filthy and often considered sexually promiscuous. Used especially of a woman or girl.“
I fucking hate this magazine and others like it.
I want to say “at least they tried” but no. not worth it.
YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG.
Cosmo, you can tell people to stop slut-shaming when a) you manage to actually figure out what it is (as you clearly have not quite gotten there yet) and b) when you stop telling women they have to do X, Y, Z or they aren’t really being a woman the “right way.”

I need 3 goats and a sheaf of wheat…
These never, ever, get old
Hahaha! OMG, for some reason Hipster Aveline cracks me up more than any of the rest. She’s wearing that Olivia Newton John headband ironically, guys.
Aveline. ♥
“I mean it was SO obvious what they meant…”
I wish to have a tea party with Hipster!Aveline and Hipster!Fenris.
Priceless.
That baby is too adorable. That baby had also better have lots of cameos this season because I need that level of cute to go along with my weekly servings of ookeydeadpeople.

Beckett and Castle are my second favorite current TV couple after Bones and Booth.
