On the topic of LGBTQIA+ headcanons/mods for cis and/or straight characters.

You know there is some serious shit going on when I am bothering to write with correct grammar.

Q: You can make a straight character LGBTQ+ but not an LGBTQ+ character straight? Isn’t that a little hypocritical?
A: No, but it’s about context, fictional characters are created by people in our current world, with our current world’s perceptions and current status of LGBTQ+ people surrounding said creators, and of course, we consumers.

With that in mind, let’s look at some neat points about being an LGBTQ+ person at this current time:

  • Homosexual is illegal in 76+ countries.
  • In America there are 29 states in which is it legal for an employer to fire a person for being gay.
  • In all but 3 states “Conversion Therapy” on minors is legal.

Now; add in heteronormativity. When was the last time you saw a new MAINSTREAM/BLOCKBUSTER movie released with an openly, visibly, LGBTQ+ lead/hero/heroine? Never? Can you name more than ten openly LGBTQ+ characters from recent movies? Probably not.

We are invisible, through history we have been demonised, silenced, covered up, killed, or worse. Us taking one from you and MAKING A NON-CANON RE-IMAGINING is categorically not the same as you taking from us, you have taken enough. You have everything already. 99% of characters? Straight, cis.

If you can read this and still think those two things are equivalents, in a world where prejudice against LGBTQ+ people is still so rampant and destructive: You are a terrible human being, congrats.

So, to end my point; perhaps it would be hypocritical if we were treated as equals, but we are not. Please acknowledge this, please accept it. No straight person is ‘hurt’ by LGBTQ+ headcanons/mods, but erasing the precious few LGBTQ+ characters we have hurts LGBTQ+ people across the board.
