Things like this make me weep. We–Americans–like to think we’re better than this, that things like this don’t happen here any more. But they do, and they have have for decades, for a century at least. It’s happening to these protesters, it happens to African-Americans, it happens to Hispanic Americans and Latino Americans, it’s happened to a lot more Americans than anyone wants to realize. It happened back when early unionizers fought for better working conditions and were shot to death for their trouble. It happened to World War I veterans in 1932 when the Bonus Army camped out in Washington for the benefits they were promised and instead were assaulted by American soldiers who had orders to remove them.

We still have so far to go as a country.
